Peter is a professional photographer and educator living on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario. He regularly leads photography courses and workshops for novice and enthusiast photographers and travels across North America as an Olympus Visionary providing lectures and seminars on landscape, wildlife, and astrophotography. His work has been published in a number of magazines in both Canada and the U.S. and has been recognized for excellence on a number of photography websites. Peter is an avid outdoor enthusiast with a passion for wilderness camping, canoeing and kayaking.
Capturing a great nature or landscape photo requires planning, an understanding of light and composition, and the ability to work a scene to produce the best images possible given the conditions. Join Olympus Visionary, Peter Baumgarten as he provides tips, techniques, and lots of practice in the field that will help you improve your photographs.
Topics will include, quality of light, compositions that incorporate the elements of design, pre-visualization, basic camera settings, focus bracketing and stacking, using common filters, post-processing and others. Since landscape photographers generally work at the bookends of the day, this course will involve some early morning and/or late evening shooting opportunities.
Students should arrive with a good understanding of the exposure triangle and how to use their camera’s shooting modes, particularly aperture priority and manual modes. Participants should bring the following equipment; interchangeable lens camera (dSLR or mirrorless), wide angle zoom or prime lens, telephoto zoom or prime lens, macro lens (optional), filters – circular polarizer, neutral density, graduated neutral density (optional, but recommended), sturdy tripod, laptop with the latest version of Lightroom and Photoshop pre-installed.
